Forex: USDX (Index USD)

When you are speaking about the Index USD, what do you mean? What exactly is an index for the dollar? The index basically measures the performance of the dollar against multiple currencies such as the Euro, Canadian Dollar, the Pounds Sterling and Japanese Yen for example. This is a mean that is geometric in nature that weighs the dollar value as compared to the above currencies. It was started in 1973 after the changing of the Bretton Woods System of dollar evaluation. Why do they compare 20 of the world’s countries to the buying power of the dollar?
This is because these countries are the basis of global trade for the US, they have developed currency with quotes that are independently determined and they are traded in correlation to the currencies in USDX. Index USD weighs these currencies and weights according to trade. If you have a quote value of 110.65, this would mean that the market value has grown 10.64 from a certain date such as April 1973 for example. They use the date of 1973 as the base period of comparison for the value of the dollar. The current rate of the USDX shows the dollar value average against the base period.
Index USD has reached a high of 165 and a low of 76 based on the 1973 period. The volatility of the dollar can be compared with stock index futures for a comparison of the dollar’s value at any given point in time. This index is updated 24 hours a day.
