Forex: USD/JPY (US Dollar vs Japanese Yen)

If you are looking at this particular currency pair, you will notice that the dollar is the base and the yen is the counter. Now, why would you trade like that, given the dollar and its volatile reaction to everything? This USD/JPY pair can be called a balanced pair with the US dollar possibly being the weaker and the yen being the strongest of the pair. Now to be able to sell this pair, you need to have enough of both in the American currency to sell in the Japanese currency so that you can take advantage of market vulnerability.
When you are dealing with this particular pair, notice that although the dollar and yen are paired, that this is not a classic cross currency trade. Any true cross currency trade will not have the American dollar in it due to volatility of the dollar against any other currency. With the USD/JPY combination, you are able to take advantage of certain market conditions in both the US and Japan that may not be able to be exploited otherwise with any other type of pairing of the Japanese Yen. With market conditions being in flux, a sharp trader can make the most of any weak situation and turn it into a strong situation.
When markets and conditions are right, this pairing of the USD/JPY will make a good sell. So if you are looking to exploit the Asian and United States markets, this is the pair to choose to do just that.
